Keeping the horizon in sight

March 30, 2020

Recent conversations with businesses show clearly that we are absolutely at the centre of the storm right now, with no sign of let up. Clearly the daily news is grim and will not improve for a time and our absolute priority is the health and well-being of family and friends.

However, we have to look to the future and retain a view of the horizon;those with sound businesses today must still have a fundamentally sound business 3-6 months in the future. Clearly there are no easy answers and every business will have its own unique challenges. There are though some basic principles that we think work for all:

  • Take what action you can to curtail unnecessary cost and mitigate ongoing bills. Sounds obvious of course but every penny saved is valuable.

  • Explore really carefully and quickly the Governmental support initiatives. There has been unprecedented support announced and we should all seek help where necessary. Whilst there will be instances of “falling down the cracks”, broadly there will be something for most businesses.

  • Talk: Use the time to discuss issues with others, it helps. We are happy to talk to anyone as we collectively seek a path through.

  • Look to the horizon: start thinking now how your business can adapt or not in what will clearly be a very different world going forward.
