A new day, new challenges

March 24, 2020

It seems a bit incongruous to look out the window to a beautiful Spring day whilst all around us a metaphorical storm is raging. However, in my view, it gives us all hope that these times will pass and we can resume our lives in a newly positive, and hopefully changed manner.

We spent yesterday mostly on the phone working with a small number of good businesses who are experiencing an existential crisis. The key word in that sentence is good and this has to be the driving force going forward. How do you make sure that your good business survives and once again prospers as we emerge the other side?

Clearly, where packages of support are available and needed, they must be sought out. The government, whilst not perfect, is doing an unprecedented amount to help SMEs. More importantly, planning is key. We must all put together a 3-6 month plan to protect businesses and employees, whilst still meeting your customer needs if it is possible. Every business is different and operating in a unique set of circumstances;the challenge for good businesses though is the same, survive and prosper.

Finally, there is a rare opportunity as a result of this desperate situation. Rarely do smaller businesses get a time to draw breath and reconfigure themselves for the future. Here is such an opportunity and we think good businesses should take it. We are happy to discuss these issues “virtually” whilst the current and correct embargoes remain in place. In the meantime good health, physically and mentally.
